About the Language
Japanese, a member of the Japonic language family, is the native language of approximately 125 million people in Japan and emigrant communities around the world. While the language contains numerous words borrowed from Chinese, and written Japanese uses Chinese characters (kanji) in combination with two syllabic scripts, hiragana and katakana, the two languages are not considered to be in the same language family.
