About the Language
Kirundi, also known as Rundi, is spoken by over eight million people in Burundi and adjacent parts of Tanzania, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. The Kirundi dialect and the Kinyarwanda dialect of neighboring Rwanda together comprise the Rwanda-Rundi language, a member of the Bantu subgroup of the Niger–Congo language family. It is the mother tongue of the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa people. Kirundi is a tonal language, in which meaning is conveyed by differences in pitch.
