About the Language
Vietnamese is an Asian language of the Austro-Asiatic family with over 80 million native speakers. It is the official language of Vietnam and the mother tongue of the Vietnamese people, including about three million overseas. It also is spoken as a first or second language by many ethnic minorities of Vietnam. As a byproduct of French colonial rule, the language displays some influence from French. In earlier times, Vietnamese was written with modified Chinese characters, but today a Latin alphabet with additional diacritics for tones and certain vowels and consonants is used.
