About the Language
Amharic is the second most spoken Semitic language in the world, after Arabic, and is an official language in Ethiopia, with about 25 million native speakers. It has been the working language of government and military organizations since medieval times. There are also speakers in other countries, particularly Eritrea, Canada, the United States, and Sweden. The Amharic language takes its name from the Amhara region in northwestern Ethiopia.
