About the Language
German is a West Germanic language, related to English and Dutch. With nearly 100 million speakers worldwide, German is an official language of many countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. The history of the language begins with the High German consonant shift separating Old High German dialects from Old Saxon.
