About the Language
Hebrew is a West Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic family. It became extinct by the 4th century, but was revived in the 1880s. With over 8 million speakers, it is spoken natively in Israel and various other parts of the world. Modern Hebrew is used for informal speech by educated Israelis, and differs from Classical Hebrew, which is used in prayer and religious studies in Jewish communities around the world, as well as for study of the Old Testament or ancient Hebrew literature.
