About the author(s):

Karla Dencker-Koenig graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1988 with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. In 1991 she received her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University in River Forest. She has taken an additional 30 hours of study in child behavior and is working on her Type 75 Certificate in Administration and Supervision. She teaches first and second multi-age classes in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Prior to teaching her multi-age class, she taught the sixth grade, fifth grade, and third grade. Karla is actively involved with technology in her district and assists in training other teachers using various computer programs. She’s also a member of her school’s state development team and evaluation committee.

Mary Lu Muoletto, Editor and Author, has recently completed 36 years in public education. She obtained a Ph.B. from DePaul University, Chicago, an M.E. from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and has completed advanced courses at National Louis University and University of Illinois. She has taught students in the primary and intermediate grades and in the school district’s gifted program. She has served as curriculum supervisor working with teachers at the K-8 level, a director of gifted education, coordinator of state and federal programs, and assistant principal. She is an Associate Instructor at National Louis University.

Mary Lu has served as a chairperson for the State Board of Education Advisory Council in Gifted Education (Springfield, Ill.). She is a member of the University of Illinois College of Education Alumni Association (President, 1982-85 Champaign; Loyalty Award recipient), the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Council for Exceptional Children, the National Council for Social Studies, Kiwanis, and Who’s Who in the World. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, reading and photography.
